Shellbound

I've been working on this piece on & off for nearly a month in between deadlines... just like this poor creature I'm desperately eager to get moving, but my progress is oh so s l o w...
if only we were both better adapted for speed.

Acrylic on text (from Steele's Fourteen Weeks in Physics, 1878) & star map (from 1906 Chambers's Encyclopaedia) on canvas, 12"x12" Please click for details.

Shellbound will be in my upcoming show at the Block Gallery (Hargett Street, Raleigh NC) 4 June-28 July. It's called Picturing the Fantastic & includes 22 pieces of mine as well as the wonderfully weird work of Tisha Edwards Weddington. Her paintings are HUGE while mine will be accompanied by magnifying glasses (really!)-- I think the contrast adds a delightfully vertiginous Wonderland effect. Thanks to Sarah Blackmon for putting this together!

I think this is one of your best pieces Leah. I love the color palette and of course the character, half cute half mysterious. Your work makes me sigh...

you're putting in a lot of work, but it's showing! It looks fantastic! I wish I was on that side of the US so I could attend the show...but thanks for posting the pic on Illustration Friday so we could all see it!

I love these pieces that are painted on top of text. But are there issues with acidity (and therefore fugitive artwork?), or are you scanning and printing out on archival paper?

I've enjoyed your work for years. I have a folder of your pieces that I tore out of old Crickets long ago. Love even more what you are doing now.

This show that you speak of, it's not anywhere near Salt Lake City, just asking. Very well rendered, a lovely sense of humor.

I've been out of touch for awhile now, but every time I visit your work I think "Damn, Leah is so amazingly talented!" Really Leah it's staggering! I would love to see your originals in person one day.

Thanks so much for the kind comments, everyone! It makes me feel a lot better about being such a slowpoke!

Tara (tlc)-- I used the original papers when I first started out with this style, but for various reasons-- mainly archival issues & my reluctance to tear up beautiful old things-- I decided to go the archival scan route. I do miss the letterpress texture, but honestly, by the time I slop on all that paint it's hardly noticeable, & I have the added option of changing the scale of the type.

Hello, well I must say that is wonderfully exciting :) 22 pieces did you say, Yowza! It's not the speed that it takes its the result that matters - that's all people will see in a hundred years - the results - and I bet they will still be looking :)
